Positively Bummed

Danielle tested positive for COVID yesterday evening.

She was feeling a little under the weather yesterday morning and took it easy most of the day. She worked in the bedroom and laid down when she could, and took off work early to try to sleep.

Hopefully that bit of isolation reduces the chances that anyone else in the house got it, including myself, Graham, and Sylvia, Graham’s nanny two days a week. For now we’re taking precautions both as though Graham and I have it and as though we don’t, meaning that Danielle is continuing to isolate in the bedroom and Graham is staying home from daycare today.

I’m hoping that probability shakes in our favor here and that this is a mild case. We’re all vaccinated and boosted, so odds are good that we’ll have an easy time of it. And so far neither Graham nor I have any symptoms suggesting COVID (but we’ll test this morning anyway). We are a little more worried than usual because Danielle is just starting her second trimester, and so we have instructions from her doctor of what to take (and not) and what to keep an eye on and what to worry about (and not).

This also has a bunch of effects on our plans and our day to day routines. These are of course secondary to the importance of our health, which is why they get interrupted in the first place. These are two D&D sessions I had planned with my friends to try to finish our current campaign before I move, a work trip I have planned for a couple days next week, and of course work in general.

The first of those D&D sessions was scheduled for last night at Zack’s house. I let the guys know early in the day that I might need to remote into the session because Danielle might need me home to help with Graham’s evening and bedtime routine. Then when she tested positive that of course meant that “help with” became “do all of.” We still got to play, albeit a bit shortened because we had to start after Graham was asleep and I had to eject a little early when he woke up and was having trouble settling back down.

The other session was/is planned for Saturday. We were going to do a double-long session in the afternoon and evening, but so long as there’s a chance we can avoid Graham getting COVID, childcare falls exclusively to me, which means again waiting until Graham is asleep for the night before we start playing.

I’m supposed to fly out Tuesday night through Friday afternoon for a work trip to my company’s office. I’m one of only a couple of remote employees, and I make a trip up every couple months or so for special occasions, in this case meetings to set our goals for the quarter. On a personal level, I’m not heartbroken of course, because it’s just work, but I do enjoy when I get to see everyone in person.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see right now where this goes, figure out the best ways to navigate/execute on the precautions, and hope for the best. 🤞

  1. That’s rough. I can empathize with this situation. (Bouts of COVID wracked our house’s daycare attendance ability last year.)
